Some of the most interesting people in the world have also been the weirdest.
Take, for example, Albert Einstein.
We all know how brilliant he was.
But did you know that he also had some quirky traits?
For instance, he never used to wear socks, not even when visiting the President of the United States.
Also, when he was tired of fake smiling for the photographers after one of his birthday parties, he stuck his tongue out (which is now a famous photo).
And when doctors suggested surgery to save his life, he called it “tasteless” to extend one’s life artificially!
So, my point is that being weird is not a bad thing.
If you have ever been called weird, you are probably an interesting person.
And you should be happy and proud that you are different from the rest.
In a world where everybody tries to be like the next person, uniqueness can be quite refreshing.
However, if you want to understand why people might think that you’re weird, let me just talk about a few reasons down below.
- 1) Your Fashion Sense Is Unique
- 2) People Don’t Understand Your Interests
- 3) You Have An Odd Sense of Humor
- 4) You Don’t Always Practice Normal Social Protocol
- 5) You Don’t Share Other People’s Beliefs
- 6) You Like To Spend Time Alone
- 7) You Don’t Follow The Societal Script of Life
- 8) You Might Be Socially Awkward
- 9) You May Act Childish At Times
- 10) You Have Too Much Esoteric Knowledge
- 11) You Might Behave Differently With Different People
- 12) You Tend To Zone Out At Times
1) Your Fashion Sense Is Unique
These days, people’s fashion sense is influenced by celebrities and social media.
Everybody just wants to follow the trend to conform to the status quo.
If an influencer starts wearing oversized T-shirts, everyone starts doing the same!
If a celebrity styles their hair a certain way, so many people adopt that style just because it is trendy. This is especially seen in the younger generations.
In such a society, if you take your own path and wear clothes to express yourself, it is easy to be seen as a weird person.
Remember, in an inauthentic world, authenticity seems weird.
So, if people think you’re strange for doing what any normal human should do, be that as it may!
Express your values, ethics, ethnicity, and traditions through your fashion sense without any hesitation.
2) People Don’t Understand Your Interests
Do you know what I love the most about our human race?
It’s that we are all different from one another.
We all have different ways of perceiving the world and have unique interests, desires, passions, etc. This is what makes our species interesting.
Sadly, though, things have taken a wrong turn.
Nowadays, people are more interested in mainstream things that are perceived as being “cool.”
I mean, take the example of superhero movies.
There was a time when people used to avoid such movies because they thought it would make them appear nerdy. But now that superhero movies are mainstream, everybody likes to go watch them!
So, if you have interests that are not common, confusing, or deep, you might be considered weird by so-called normal people.
Again, let them think what they want.
You should just focus on what makes you happy.
3) You Have An Odd Sense of Humor
Everybody has a different sense of humor.
What is funny to one person may not be funny to another.
And that is totally okay.
However, if you tend to have a darker sense of humor, people might think you’re weird.
Maybe you like jokes about topics that are considered taboo or too graphic.
Maybe your style of humor makes them uncomfortable!
Whatever it is, your unique perspective on what is funny can irk some people.
After all, most people like familiarity, whether it is their choice of restaurants, people, comedy, hobbies, or whatever else.
But here’s the great thing.
You don’t have to change yourself or your sense of humor because of other people.
Just be authentic to yourself and find like-minded people!
4) You Don’t Always Practice Normal Social Protocol
I am sure you are aware of the unspoken but largely accepted social rules and “etiquettes.”
These are things that almost everyone adheres to as a part of society and while interacting with other people.
These include how you talk, how you sit, what you say, what you don’t say, the way you laugh, and so on.
Of course, these social protocols can vary depending on one’s nationality, culture, religion, etc.
So, if you happen to be someone who doesn’t always practice these social norms, you are obviously going to be seen as weird.
For example, if you like to be brutally honest, even if it might be uncomfortable, people might think you’re weird.
If you like to laugh out loud in awkward situations, again, people might think you’re weird.
But who’s to say what “normal” is?
Just because the majority of people have agreed to something doesn’t make it right.
Especially if they’ve agreed to it only to seem normal.
Have you ever been told how weird you are because you believe in angels and demons?
Have you ever been given an odd look by a friend when you told them that you believe in aliens?
Well, then you already know that people with “peculiar” beliefs are always seen as abnormal.
Obviously, this goes against the very thing that makes us humans – our different beliefs and perceptions about the world that we live in.
I don’t understand why people react the way they do when you don’t share their beliefs.
I don’t understand why they have such a problem with out-of-the-box opinions and ideas.
Aren’t these peculiar ideas the reason why we have been able to build such an advanced civilization?
Imagine stopping the Wright Brothers from building an airplane because of their “weird” idea that humans should be able to fly!
If anyone tries to make you feel bad about your unique beliefs and ideas, you should distance yourself from them.
Or just call them out on it.
Plain and simple.
There is no reason to think that you are wrong somehow.
Just keep doing you!
6) You Like To Spend Time Alone
While everyone needs some alone time to recharge mentally, some people like to be alone for longer periods.
There are also people who like being alone most of the time.
I don’t see anything wrong with that.
After all, how can you tell someone that their way is the wrong way and yours is the right one?
How can you take people who like being alone and force them to be more social?
But there are people who try to do that.
They just can’t stand that some people are happy all by themselves doing things they consider “boring” or uncanny.
They call people like these “antisocial” as though they want to destroy the fabric of society itself!
Look, you have every right to live your life the way you like.
If being with yourself makes you happy, it’s none of other people’s business.
If they think you’re weird, let them! That’s not going to change anything about your life.
So, enjoy yourself.
7) You Don’t Follow The Societal Script of Life
Ok, so tell me if you’ve heard this before.
As a normal person in society, you are supposed to go to school, graduate from college, get a job, get married, have kids, and work your entire life before retiring when you’re old.
That’s because you’ve probably heard this script of life a million times.
Everyone keeps saying that this is what a person should do.
But when you ask them why, they don’t have an answer for it.
They just say something like, “That’s the way it has always been.”
Well, I’m sure the cavemen would disagree!
Life is meant to be lived as we see fit.
- If you want to drop out of college because you have a great idea for a business, do it.
- If you don’t want to get married, don’t!
- If you want to retire in your 30s, you are more than welcome to do so.
Sure, people will think that you’re weird when you go off-script, but hey, it’s your life.
8) You Might Be Socially Awkward
Do you have difficulty addressing a large group of people?
Do you get confused as to which eye to look into when you’re talking to someone?
Do you get fidgety in social situations?
Do you tend to be quiet at a social gathering?
Well, chances are you have been called weird your whole life.
You see, people have a certain expectation of how other people should behave in social situations.
And anyone who doesn’t meet these expectations is immediately branded as being strange (even if there is nothing wrong with the person).
It seems like people just don’t understand that there are different types of people on the planet and not everybody enjoys being around other human beings.
As such, they might tend to behave nervously and do things that might seem out of place.
Only if people understood this!
9) You May Act Childish At Times
It is tragic that most people lose their inner child when they grow up.
Usually, as people get older and older, they become more serious about life.
And somehow, they start thinking that this is normal behavior and everybody should be this way.
This couldn’t be further from the truth.
If you are able to keep that inner child alive even as an adult, there is no better way to live life.
There are many people in the world who are like this.
They live as you’d expect children to.
They are curious about everything in the world, they become happy for no reason, they don’t take life too seriously, they laugh out loud, and so on.
Unfortunately, though, these people are considered weird by many.
Often, they are told to “grow up,” as if growing up means becoming miserable.
If you’ve been called weird due to this nature of yours, you should do what children do best – laugh it off.
10) You Have Too Much Esoteric Knowledge
The word “esoteric” means “intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people.”
This definition alone should tell you how esoteric knowledge gets treated in the world.
If you tend to know things that other people think are non-typical and strange, you are probably going to be called weird.
Obviously, this does not mean that there is something wrong with you.
On the contrary, it shows that those people don’t have the capacity to understand things that are outside their limited sphere of typical material.
So, if anything, you should be proud of yourself for knowing things that most people don’t.
11) You Might Behave Differently With Different People
In today’s world, people think that they are obligated to be polite to everybody.
It has become kind of a social norm, and on the surface, it makes sense.
You should be kind towards people and treat everyone with respect.
However, that doesn’t mean you need to keep tolerating people who annoy you or want to take advantage of you.
If you want to avoid people who are not good for your mental health, you have every right to do so.
Obviously, this means that you will treat different people differently.
You won’t put on a fake mask of kindness depending on who you’re dealing with.
In a way, you will be more open and honest about how you feel about others.
This might be seen as weird behavior because other people would rather be fake than real!
12) You Tend To Zone Out At Times
This happens with many people (especially if they are in the creative field).
You see, some people see things and go on a completely different tangent in their heads.
At that time, it might seem like they are zoned out or that there is something wrong with them.
But that’s not the case at all.
It’s just their brains going haywire with all sorts of ideas and thoughts.
For example, let’s say that you are a creative person and are talking to someone at your workplace.
The other person mentions something about a flying car.
Now, as a creative, your mind might conjure up all sorts of imaginations.
You might start wondering what a world with flying cars might look like. You might start visualizing people getting on and off these cars and living much better lives.
Now, as you are doing all of this in your head, you might appear completely zoned out to the other person.
They might think that you are either ignoring them or have entered a trance-like state.
Either way, they might think you’re weird.
That’s the beauty of weirdness, it makes you different, it makes you unique, it is you being yourself… so whatever what other people say, just be you, just be weird and be happy.
